Gas Installation Pipework Regulations

Gas pipework in South Africa is built to SANS 10087-1, with SANS 1539 and SANS 329 governing the pipe and fittings. The rules below are what an inspection checks before a Certificate of Compliance is issued.

What the gas pipework regulations require

Materials

Only approved pipe and fittings. The material is chosen for where the run goes — buried, exposed, or through a wall — not for what is on the van.

Sizing

The line is sized for the total connected appliance load, not for the largest single appliance. This is why adding a geyser to a hob line is not simply a tee.

Burial and protection

Buried sections are laid at depth, protected and marked. Sections through walls are sleeved. Nothing that has to stay reachable is concealed.

Routing

The run avoids ignition sources, drains and openings, and does not pass through spaces where a leak could collect.

Valves

An isolation valve where the gas enters the building, and a shut-off at each appliance.

Ventilation

Combustion air and cylinder ventilation are part of the installation, not an afterthought — the requirements change with the appliance and where it is mounted.

Testing

A pressure test is held and recorded before a gas certificate of compliance is issued.
